SAY IT EVERYDAY

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

    • Do:  Actively Listen
      •  A lot of times we want to respond or offer advice before our kids finish speaking.  Simply wait.
    • Don't:  Be distracted while they talk.
      • When they finish, give feedback by paraphrasing.
    • Do:  Empathize
      • Try to see things from their perspective.
    • Don't reject their feelings by saying things like, "it's not that bad", or "there's no need to be upset".  Their feelings are their feelings.  If you invalidate their feelings, they may shut down.
    • Do:  Manage your emotions
      • Remaining calm is key to positive communiction
    • Don't Attack
      • You may say something you regret later
    • Do:  Be clear and direct
      • Be sure to be respectful
    • Do:  Give reasons for boundaries and rules
